Having a well thought out marketing plan is essential for success. Your business relies on it! So let’s break down 10 questions you need to ask yourself in order to get the most out of your marketing plan. Question #1 - What want or need does your product or service fill? Understand the pain point of your customers is key to building a good marketing plan. The more you know, the better your message. Question #2 - What is your target market? Who, What, When, Where, Why? Age, gender, interests, lifestyle, etc. Knowing these things are vital to a strong marketing plan. Where do they spend their time online? How do they currently find or become aware of companies that fill the want or need are trying to fill? Question #3 - Who are your competitors? Try them! What makes you different? Why choose you? If you don’t have direct competitors, what are other solutions out there that try to fill the wants/needs of your customers? What makes you the best option? Question #4 - What are the goals of your marketing plan? How many sales or leads do you want (or need) to get from it? What is your target Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)? What is your starting budget and what percent of sales do you plan to invest back into marketing as you grow? When do you expect to achieve those metrics? Reverse engineer your goals and build realistic projections that ramp into achieving them because remember - marketing does not work overnight. Question #5 - What is your strategy for search and social? What keywords do you want to rank for and run ads for on Google? What keywords do you want to rank high for on maps? What social channels do you want to build a presence on, what kind of content do you want to post and what kind of ads do you want to run. Spend some time here and it will save you time in the future! Question #6 - What is your strategy to build a strong online reputation across multiple review sites? (Pro tip - set up a free review profile at www.TopRatedLocal.com ) Question #7 - What is your sales process once you generate a lead or sale? What collateral, emails, videos do you need to create to assist your sales team? Once a potential customer is in your sales funnel don't let them go without a fight. What landing pages do you need? What marketing funnels do you need to build? Your website is a living breathing organism so don't be surprised if this list of content grows over time. Spyfu, SEMrush or call us to see what your competitors are spending. 4- Invest in more than just ad budget, invest in talent and time. Design and content matter more now than ever. It’s not just about spending more money on Google ads or Facebook ads, it’s about investing in talented people to manage those campaigns and design creative ads that are constantly fresh! 5 - Invest in multi-channel. The 360 degree approach. Be diversified! Invest in Google inbound ads, social ads, retargeting, SEO/content marketing, email marketing, reputation management and more. We generally recommend investing roughly half your budget on paid ads and the other half on organic/social strategies. 6 - Not all marketing is created equial. $150/mo = waste of money. You are paying for nothing. $150 with no profits is more expensive than $15,000 a month that’s bringing you $15,001 in profits. Would you rather give me $100 and get back nothing or give me $2000 and get back $3000. If you look at it that way, the cost of 1 is $100 and the cost of the other is $1000 is back in your pocket. Thus, I’m writing you this letter in my final days on this earth in hopes that the lesson’s I’d prayed I could have taught you while being at your side over the course of your life will instead be taught through this ink and paper right now. I’ve given your mother several other letters on things like love, friendship, faith and more which she’s been instructed to give to you when the time is right, but this letter I’d like to give you now. It’s on business. Like your great grandfather, grandfather and myself, you’re born to be an entrepreneur son. I’ll not be around to assure you of this at the moment you feel the calling to start something new, but are scared of the unknown, so just trust that you are. It’s in your blood. Don’t deny it. Be proud of it. Entrepreneurs fuel the economy, provide jobs, build communities, shape our culture, fund charities, ignite ideas and change lives. They make the world a better place. When you grow up and you’re ready, pick something of your own to start son. Pick something you’re passionate about and inspires you. Charge a reasonable price for it and then provide unreasonably excellent value for it. It will be hard - the most difficult thing you’ll ever do. But don’t give up. I’ll be watching you and rooting for you. Be a great leader and pay your people well. Don’t be selfish. And don’t just inspire people to be good at their job but to be good people. Care for their success in work and life, not just work. Set high goals and demand greatness of your team. And grow, don’t settle for sideways - attempt to grow quarter after quarter, year after year. The bigger you get the more people you can help son. But don’t get consumed by it. Keep your family first. Start your days many hours before the rest so you can have time to spend with your wife and kids. Nights and weekends aren’t for work, their for family. When you hit a wall seek the advice of those smarter than you, but in the end, remember to always do what you feel is right for you’ll be criticized anyways. In times of doubt, read this letter, and pray for wisdom. When not in doubt, pray for humility and give thanks. Build something incredible son. This life is short, make the biggest impact you can. I demand it, as I know you demand it of yourself. I love you. I will miss you. And I want you to know I’m your biggest fan now and forever. Whether you’re running ads on Google, Facebook, Instagram, doing billboards, magazine ads, the list goes on… it’s essential you have strong ad copy so you stand out! You want to stand out like a person in a red sweater in a crowd full of white sweaters. Here are 5 tips on how to write better ad copy. Tip #1- Sell the want, not the what! Think about the end goal of your prospects and restate that goal in a creative way. For example, for lawn care the goal is to save time and have a better looking lawn. So good ad copy could be “Finally, a greener lawn than your neighbors without lifting a finger”. A sign company might say “Your business deserves a sign that makes it proud and makes you money.” Tip #2 - Spot check the competition! When trying to come up with good ad copy, check out the ad copy used by other businesses in your space. What do you like? What do you not like? Use this information to inspire your ad copy and one up them! Tip #3 - A/B test your ad copy Test 2-3 different versions of your ad copy to see what works better. Whether it’s via an email campaign subject line, Google ad, social ad or what have you. Often times the ad we think will do best does not. So test! Tip #4 - Keep it simple! The shorter the better. Most people skim through your headlines in your content. So keep them short and sweet. The longer the ad copy the less effective. So don’t be wordy when it comes to the main headline. Tip #5 - Match the ad copy throughout the conversion funnel Often times the ad copy is good, but the next step of the funnel does not match. Such as a Google ad to the landing page or the Instagram ad to the landing page. Make sure the ad copy headline from the ad matches the ad copy headline on the landing page or you’ll see a higher bounce rate. Bonus tip - Design does matter! Even with good ad copy, if the design of your ads is weak, it will not be effective. At the end of the day, people want to be happy. So show them what you offer makes people happy and/or your staff is super friendly and happy. Hack #2 - Make sure all your other images add value. They should be relevant to your product or service and not just a random image of the mountains (for example) unless you sell mountain related products and services. Hack #3 - Showcase your strong reputation by highlighting customer ratings, review site logos and ratings, case studies, etc.. Show that many people have used your product or service and are happy they did! Hack #4 - Make the path to conversion as simple as possible. Reduce form fields to only what’s needed, leave the rest for later. Studies show that once you cross over 10 form fields conversions start to drop heavily. If you can swing it, 5 fields or less has the highest conversion rate. However, this might generate less qualified leads, so it’s a balance. If you can auto-fill any fields, that’s also powerful. Keep it 1-2 clicks to checkout. Make it easy to find your contact info. Keep the CTA (Call-To-Action) buttons in-sight at all times! Also integrate them throughout the page content. Hack #5 - Come up with a good CTA, tell them exactly what they will get. Put yourself in the mind of the consumer, what do they truly want? Make that your CTA! Use the word “Get” if possible. Hack #6 - Use video! It does not need to be a full blown production video, often times the raw videos of somebody just explaining the product or service work the best! Basically, give the user your 1 minute sales pitch on why they should choose you or your product. What makes you different! How will it work? Essentially, think of all the potential questions a user would have and answer those in that video. Hack #7 - Create retargeting audience lists for your landing pages and product pages to bring the user back! Filter out people that have converted from those audience lists. Hack #8 - Make sure your landing page headline/copy matches the copy from your ads so it’s extremely relevant and has a low bounce rate. Use dynamic content if your website has that functionality so you can literally change your headline automatically in real-time based on what ad the user is coming from! Countless studies show when the ad copy exactly matches the headline conversions sky rocket. Hack #9 - Compare your landing page to your competitors landing page. Is yours better? If so, great! So send the message when you feel they are most ready to take action, such as just before lunch for a restaurant or in the evening shopping time for an eCommerce store. Step 7 - Send ONLY the most valuable content and don’t over do it! If you do this, you’ll see few users opt-out and more list growth. Plus, you build a positive brand experience. Take pride in your content - your website is your 24/7 sales person that never calls in sick! Build in strong call to actions with your information so people can reach out! Make it easy to request more info, request walkthroughs and more. Also make it easy for people to share properties on social media! Make sure your design has lots of local images so it feels at home with your visitors. 3) Build a strong presence on social media! Share pictures and videos about all the new properties that pop up on the market inside of your niche. Share information and tips about your niche, be the clear expert! The main platforms to focus on are Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest for this. High quality images are key. Leave call to actions to direct message you for walk-throughs or more info! Before people work with you, they will research you. Give a review from every buyer and seller you work with! Even if they don’t buy, but the experience was good, ask for a review! 7) Get on 1st page of Google for your top niche keywords (organically and paid). Spend money to be on top of the page for your very best search terms. Also make sure to build pages on the different types of properties you sell, the locations, neighborhoods, etc.. Research the best keywords, then build pages for them and add content and pull in ongoing blog posts about it. One idea for blogging is to do a blog on each property and make a video! Want to learn how to increase your email open rates? Watch this video for 7 amazing tips to get more from your email marketing campaigns. Email marketing is a powerful way to increase your sales by 30% or more. But people get a ton of emails these days, so how do you do it right so you stand out in the crowd and people actually open your emails! Let’s break down 7 tips! Tip #1 - Segment your list so the content is highly targeted and relateable for that group. For example, if you sell clothing online, you’d want to segment your list by your different categories of interest so you only email that content to that group. Or if you send travel emails, you’d want to send areas of interest to relevant people. Same thing with local businesses, if you do massage, chiropractic and acupuncture, you’d want to segment that list. After all, if the content is not relatable, it will not be opened, even if your subject line is killer! Tip #2 - Create a relatable and engaging subject line. A/B test 2-3 different subject lines with small segments of your email list. Determine what the best subject line is, then send to the entire list. Make sure to keep your subject short and sweet. Test it on mobile to make sure it fits! Put yourself in the receiver's shoes, what would motivate them to open the email? Tip #3 - Send from a familiar personal name/email or company name/email. To do this, you should have an opt-in list that knows who you are! If they do not recognize you they will likely not only not open the email, but mark spam! Too high of a spam rate can get you blacklisted. Tip #4 - Make sure the domain you are sending from is verified. If not, it may not even make the inbox, it will go directly to spam and therefore not be opened. Tip #5 - Using the receiver's name or other dynamic and relevant content in the subject line can often catch their eye and increase open rates. Tip #6 - Send at the right time for your audience when you feel they’ll be actively in their inbox so your email is seen coming in or near the top of their inbox. For us, that’s Tuesday or Wednesday mornings early just before business owners arrive to work. Tip #7 - Send valuable content! If you send content that adds value, people will stay subscribed and continue to open your emails. Let’s break down 8 tips on how to set good expectations during the sales process. Tip #1 - Make the expectations clear for yourself first. It’s hard to set good expectations if you don’t know what they are! Tip #2 - Know where you need expectations the most, gather feedback from past clients, teammates, reviews, etc... It's better to learn from the past and address things head on than to avoid the conversation altogether Tip #3 - Understand why it’s important to set expectations (better experience, up-sell potential, good reviews, trust). Tip #4 - Meet and discuss in person or over the phone. Don’t email touchy topics. Email can't convey tone. Tip #5 - Get the customer’s buy-in -- ask them things like “do agree that makes sense?” or “do you understand why we do that?”, etc. Tip #6 - Put expectations in writing -- follow up your conversation with an email recap putting all the expectations in clear writing. It’s very hard to come up with content about a plumbing business the local community will enjoy enough to follow. So here’s some tips that will work for any local business! Tip #1 - Post about upcoming city events, concerts, parades, cookouts, shows, etc.. become a great resource for weekly activities! Tip #2 - Follow the local high school sports teams and post about their successes. Please love to share that! Congratulate them! Tip #3 - Share local deals / promotions to local entertainment businesses and restaurants. Tip #4 - Beautify pictures around the city, sunsets, lake/river/beach/mountain, etc.. hire a photographer to capture 25-50 great shots you can use over the next 6-12 months Tip #5 - Share high quality pictures from your business, customers, building, projects, etc.. share some inspiring words to go along with it. Here are 6 tips to help you grow and manage your Instagram account the right way: Tip #1 Pick a theme/message No one wants to follow an account that doesn’t know what it is or why it exists. They followed you because of the content they thought they'd see. If you're constantly switching gears, they'll follow someone else. Tip #2 Research hashtags Hashtags can heavily influence how you get found. Don’t spam, but mix up the hashtags you use between common and uncommon ones. Search a few different hashtags, follow the rabbit trail, and pick the most relevant popular and uncommon ones to use Tip #3 Create a content calendar If you don’t, you’ll get behind and you won’t post/grow. We all have great intentions but lets be honest - life gets in the way. You need a content calendar and the discipline to follow it. You'll thank me. Tip #4 Be dynamic Use emoticons, tag locations, tag other people, integrate Stories or IGTV, respond to comments. Don’t just post the same thing over and over and expect results. Tip #5 Follow other influencers Use your “Following” list as a way to connect your followers with other quality, curated accounts. Think of this as a playlist of other accounts your followers should follow Tip #6 Dedicate a budget Like most social media platforms you can increase your reach and growth with an ad budget. Build out your best audiences and target them. Want to "beat the algorithm"? Consider this your shortcut. BONUS TIP!: Don’t use automated bots. Auto-following/unfollowing, liking, commenting on posts, or anything else these bots promise will not help you and could get you banned. Add value and be a social part of the social community. There are 5 keys to building a strong pipeline: Key #1 - Lead Flow - you need to find a good lead source you can consistently push into your pipeline Key #2 - Effort/Discipline - you need to be disciplined to the level of effort you put forth working your leads so the pipeline does not dry up Key #3 - Process - you need a solid process you can consistently follow with each lead in the pipe Key #4 - Work Entire Pipe - you need to work the entire pipe from front to back so there are no "low" areas in your pipeline Key #5 - Don’t Give Up Too Early - if you don’t see results early, don’t give up! Want to grow your YouTube channel and generate more views? Use #youtubehashtags! Let’s break down 8 tips on how to use hashtags to grow your channel and increase your views. Tip #1 - YouTube takes the first 3 hashtags in your description and uses them as the clickable hashtags right above the title of your video on YouTube. Clickable blue links - also clickable in the description. These have nothing to do with your tags, so you have to go back into your old videos and update your descriptions to include them. Tip #2 - They are a great way to find relevant videos, and therefore, a great way to get found! As more users click on hashtags and search hashtags you’ll get found! Tip #3 - Using them will help you get found in YouTube search, Google search! They are great for your video SEO and rankings! Use the YouTube search box to see the auto-suggestions for hashtag ideas! Tip #4 - Using hashtags will help you show up in the related videos and upcoming videos and get more views! Tip #5 - Hashtags should have no spaces, don’t use more than 3, More than 15 are completely ignored, Stay relevant! Misleading tags will result in removal of your video in search, Stay away from “touchy topics”. Tip #6 - When you post a new video, it shows up on top of the hashtag feed as the “lastest videos”, so people following those hashtags see your videos on top if you post consistently! Tip #7 - Get on it early! Most people are not using hashtags yet, so there are limited videos in most hashtag feeds, this is free real estate you can own! That’s a 10x return! - Watch time went from 1,500 minutes to 50,000 in 18 months. That’s a 33x return! - Watch time went from 1,500 minutes to 150,000 in 30 months. That’s a 100x return! We started by gaining 10 subscribers per month, then 40 per month after a year, then 400 per month after 18 months, to 1,500 per month after 2.5 years. Yes, marketing takes time.
