Geoff Lawton talks about a new school garden project that is a collaboration between the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia (PRI - www.permaculture.org.au) and KidsAreSweet (www.kidsaresweet.com). Solving All the World's Problems - in a Garden
Video in original location: http://permaculture.org.au/2010/07/23/solving-all-the-problems-of-the-world-in-a-garden/ In a few short months, permaculture goodness transformed a lifeless, salted desert schoolyard into a profusion of plants - which in turn created a school within a school. The children are learning how to take control back over their own futures, their health, and how to restore their abused environment and exhausted landscape. They are bringing this knowledge home to their parents. The Jordanian Department of Education is noticing too! This garden won a national competition for environmental projects for schools - which means the whole, water stressed country is looking at the solutions found in this garden.

From the Mara Soil - a Film About Simple and Natural Solutions to Poverty, Hunger and Disease
A film directed by Steve Schrenzel What if global hunger, poverty and disease could be solved with resources already at our disposal? From the Mara Soil transports you to a community in rural Tanzania that is doing just that - solving humanity's greatest challenges with simple, natural and affordable solutions. A small plot of sandy, dry land is being transformed into a nutrient-rich food forest. Women are escaping the hazards of daily life by capturing the energy of the sun. The community is discovering cures to deadly disease in local plants and natural medicine. A local non-profit is tapping into clean, pure water just below the bedrock.... This visually stunning film captures the daily pain and suffering caused by poverty in Tanzania, and the creativity and courage of the Mara community in finding practical solutions to their own problems.

Maarten Stapper: "Agricultural Science and Technology is Stuck in a Rut"
In Maarten's video presentation above he lays out the truth about most of our specialised, reductionist, western agricultural research -- that follow-the-money tragedy that sees all research compartmentalised and isolated and which incentivises all the wrong activities. With good doses of science and common sense, he leads you through a progression of thought that brings us to the great need of the day -- participatory research by and for farmers and gardeners everywhere.
